A DIY, open-source CO₂ measurement device — NABA Fab Lab Course, 2025
Atmosphere was developed as a DIY alternative to the usually very expensive and closed-source air quality sensors currently available on the market. To achieve maximal accessibility and minimum production cost, the design relies on a 3D-printed housing, printable without any supports or special filaments. The electronics are kept to a bare minimum and can be purchased from most bigger vendors in most countries.
The device is featuring a display, showing the user three air bubbles that gradually empty out as the air quality in the room gets worse. Below these air bubbles, the device is additionally displaying the actual CO₂ value and room temperature. Everything gets measured by a rather cheap but precise CO₂ sensor. The device is using an energy-efficient ESP32 dev board and is powered using two 18650 cell Li-Ion batteries, which can be charged using the USB type C port on the side of the device and power the device for about 48h.
